The tour takes place in the Rosses, a picturesque north-western coastal region of Co Donegal, which is situated between Gweedore to the north and Gweebarra in the south.
The fishing harbour of Burtonport, located 8 km northwest of the town of Dungloe, has been the gateway to many of the islands of the Rosses for hundreds of years, including the largest island in Donegal – Arranmore.
Burtonport Tours
Our tours take in the spectacular Arranmore Islands and the harbour of Burtonport. Burtonport, known in Irish as “Ailt an Chorráin,” is a quaint fishing village that serves as a gateway to the offshore island of Arranmore, or “Árainn Mhór.” This village is steeped in maritime heritage, with its picturesque harbor bustling with activity, reflecting its enduring connection to the sea. Our 2 hour sea safari tours offer unrivaled views of the area.
The Fishing Industry
The fishing industry in this area has been in decline for many years due to the depletion of stock and strict fishing restrictions. Nevertheless, the offshore islands remain a peaceful haven of tranquillity where nature and wildlife prosper undisturbed. Visitors can marvel at the cliffs, beaches, rocky outcrops, sea stacks, and sea caves that provide a perfect habitat for marine life, as well as excellent photographic opportunities. Bird-watching enthusiasts can spot a variety of birds, and there’s also the possibility of witnessing dolphins, seals, and basking sharks in their natural habitat.

Dolphin and Whale Watching
Donegal’s coastline offers a wealth of natural beauty and cultural heritage to explore and dolphin and whale sightings are becoming more regular occurrences in the waters around Arranmore and Burtonport. These sea safari tours provide an excellent chance to observe a variety of marine species in their natural habitat. Looking at the Irish Whale and Dolphin group Website shows the recent sightings.
Food & Facilities
The tour provides beverages on board. There’s also a WC available for visitors’ convenience.
Testimonials
Thank you, Jim, for the most AMAZING 3-hour adventure to Inishkeeragh island last week, as part of Burtonport’s Festival week’s activities. I booked 4 spots for my family and my best friend booked 2 spots, and there was still plenty of room on the boat, even with 4 others. Very spacious, clean, and well-equipped boat, including a bathroom. Loved that Jim is so knowledgable about the area and was able to share facts about the island and the people who once lived there. Highly recommend Arranmore Charters! The cost was very reasonable, too. I can’t wait to book another outing with Jim!!! Thank you so much!!
